depthの語源と覚え方

中英語 depthe（深さ） から。中身は古英語 dēop（深い）（異形 dep）に -þ（形容詞から抽象名詞を作る） が付いた形で、現代英語で deep + -th と分解しても同じことである。
背景の *dʰewbʰ-（沈み込む・深い） は、底へ落ち込んでいく感覚。物理的な深さだけでなく、depth of knowledge（知識の深さ）・in depth（掘り下げて）のように内容の厚みにも使う。
補足: -th で抽象名詞を作る型は long→length、strong→strength、wide→width、warm→warmth と共通。複数形 the depths は「深み・どん底」を指す。
