ラテン語 intēnsus（緊張した・集中した）は、中へ *en- + 伸ばす *tend-という構造で、「内側へ強く伸ばした」イメージをもつ。力や注意を一点へ引き締めて集めることが、intēnsus の原義につながる。
そこから、力・感情・光などが限界近くまで高まった「激しい・強烈な」、また注意を一点へ向けた「集中した」になった。extend（外へ伸ばす）や tend、attention と関連づけ、tend は伸ばす、intense は内へ強く伸ばして集中すると覚えるとよい。
