ラテン語 acūtus（研がれた・鋭い・刺激的な）は、鋭い・尖ったことを表す *h₂eḱ- から生まれた。先端が鋭く尖っているイメージが、感覚や痛みの「鋭い」、病気の症状が「急性の」、角度が「鋭角の」へと広がった。
