ラテン語 accentus（アクセント・抑揚）は、ad-（〜へ）＋ canō（歌う・奏でる）からできた accinō（合わせて歌う）に、動作名詞を作る -tus が付いた語。「声を節に合わせて歌うように上げ下げする」が原義。
この「声の抑揚」という意味がそのまま英語 accent に受け継がれ、単語の中で目立たせる音節の「強勢・アクセント」、さらに文字に付ける「アクセント記号」の意味にも広がった。
canō の仲間には chant（聖歌・詠唱する）や cantor（先唱者）がある。can/chant を見たら「歌う」、その前の ad-（〜へ向けて）が「声を合わせる」向きを示すと覚えるとよい。
