ラテン語 focus（暖炉・火鉢）は、火を燃やす場所を指した。火が集まる一点というイメージから、光学で光線が集まる「焦点」、さらに注意や活動が集まる中心という意味へ発展した。
光学機器を調整して像を鮮明にすることが focus であり、そこから「注意を集中する」「対象を絞る」という動詞用法も生まれた。火や光が一点に集まる場面を思い浮かべれば、焦点と集中が一つにつながる。
語源の再建形 *bʰeh₂-（輝く・光る・現れる） と *dʰegʷʰ-（燃える・焼く） は、火と光のイメージを補強する。focus は「火が集まる場所」から「意識や光が集まる一点」と覚えるとよい。
