ラテン語 distringō（引き離す・気を散らす）は、dis-（ばらばらに・二つに）+ stringō（縛る・引き締める）から成る。強く引き締めたり、あちこちに引き離したりする負荷のイメージから、stress の「圧力・精神的な負担・強調する」という意味へつながった。
stringō の「引き締める」感覚は、distress（苦悩・困窮）にも残っている。締めつけられて負荷がかかる状態が stress、そこから声や意味を強く押し出すのが「強調する」と覚えるとよい。
