inflectionの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 īnflexiō（曲げること）＝ īnflectō（曲げる）+ -tiō（動作や結果を表す名詞をつくる）。頭の in- は「中へ」で *en- にさかのぼる。「まっすぐなものを曲げる」が一貫した芯である。
曲げる対象が声なら「抑揚・声調」。平板な声の高さを上下に曲げることを指す。曲げる対象が語なら「語形変化・屈折」で、go が went に、cat が cats に姿を変えるあの現象を言う。
flex（曲げる）・flexible（曲げられる）・reflect（折り返す）と同族で、flex/flect を見たら「曲げる」。イギリス綴りでは inflexion とも書き、数学では曲がり方が変わる「変曲点」を point of inflection と呼ぶ。
