caliberの語源と覚え方
覚え方
フランス語 calibre（銃身の口径）から入った語。銃身の内径、つまりその銃が撃てる弾の太さを表す軍事の用語だった。
「どれだけの弾を撃てるか」がそのまま人や物の格の比喩になり、「質・力量・水準」の意味が生まれた。a writer of the highest caliber（第一級の作家）、a job beyond his caliber（力量を超えた仕事）。口径の意味も現役で、a .38 caliber revolver のように使う。
補足: 綴りは米 caliber・英 calibre。動詞 calibrate（校正する）・名詞 calibration（校正）は同じ語から出ており、いずれも「基準の寸法に合わせる」が芯。
