ラテン語 resultō（跳ね返る・結果として生じる）の現在分詞 resultāns から。re-（後ろへ・再び）+ saltō（踊る・跳ねる）で、「跳ね返ってくる」が原義。同じ発想の語に resiliō（跳ね返る・後ろへ跳ぶ）があり、こちらは resilient（弾力のある）につながる。
ぶつけたものが跳ね返って現れるから「結果として生じる」。result（結果）の形容詞形で、the resultant damage（その結果生じた損害）のように名詞の前に置く。物理では合成したベクトルを the resultant（合力）と呼ぶ。
saltō の仲間は somersault（宙返り）・assault（飛びかかる → 襲撃）・salient（跳び出している → 際立った）。sult/sault に「跳ぶ」を見る。
