中期フランス語 sequele につながり、英語では「続編・後日談」を表す。先にある作品や出来事の後へ続くものが中心になる。a sequel to the film はその映画の続編で、同じ登場人物や世界の物語を、次の作品として描く場合などに使う。
They are making a sequel. は「彼らは続編を制作している」。元の作品を示すときは to を使い、the sequel to her first novel なら彼女の最初の小説の続編になる。sequence（順序・連続）にも後に続くという意味のつながりがある。sequel では、その連なり全体より、前の作品を受けて新たに現れる一作品を思い浮かべると、映画や本の紹介で意味がはっきりする。
