ラテン語 supplēmentum（補充品・補強物）は、suppleō（不足を補う・完成させる）+ -mentum（行為の手段や結果を表す名詞語尾）からできた語。「足りない部分を満たして完成させるもの」という原義から、英語 supplement の「補足・補遺・追加物」へ発展した。
suppleō のもとにある *pleh₁-（満たす）を意識すると、空いた部分を埋めるイメージで覚えやすい。supplement は本文に情報を足す補足、栄養の supplement は不足する成分を補うもの、と考えると意味がまとまる。
