matterの語源と覚え方
覚え方
matter は、材料や物質を表す matere と結びつき、「物質・材料」という意味になった。目に見える素材を指す用法から、考える対象となる事柄、つまり「問題」や「事柄」へ意味が広がっている。
「重要である」という動詞の matter は、ある事柄が考慮すべき対象になる、つまり「問題になる」という発想から生まれる。What matters? は「何が問題なのか」「何が重要なのか」という意味になる。
matter を見たら「考える対象になるもの」と覚えると、物質・問題・重要性の三つの意味をまとめやすい。material（物質の・材料）や immaterial（物質でない・重要でない）も matter と関連づけて覚えられる。
