top はギリシャ語で「場所」、ic は「〜に関する」。議論の中で取り上げる場所、すなわち論じる場そのものを指したことから、topic は「話題・主題」になった。
会議で今は予算の話をしているなら、その予算が一つの topic。話の中身に短い見出しを付ける感覚でつかむとよい。a topic of conversation は「会話の話題」、change the topic は「話題を変える」。段落の中心を示す topic sentence は「主題文」である。
