affair は afere（事項・事件）にさかのぼり、ad- / ad（〜へ・〜に向かって）+ *dʰeh₁-（置く・なす）という組み合わせで捉えられる。「ある事柄をそこへ置く・なす」という発想から、扱われる事柄や出来事を表すようになった。

そこから affair は「事柄・事件」を意味し、さらに人と人の間で進行する「関係」や、しばしば秘密の恋愛関係も指すようになった。つまり、何かが「関わる場所に置かれ、進められている」というイメージである。

ad- を見たら「〜へ」、置く・なすという *dʰeh₁- のイメージから「取り扱う事柄」と覚えると、affair の「事件・関係」の両方につながる。
