affair は afere（事項・事件）にさかのぼり、ad- / ad（〜へ・〜に向かって）+ *dʰeh₁-（置く・なす）という組み合わせで捉えられる。「ある事柄をそこへ置く・なす」という発想から、扱われる事柄や出来事を表すようになった。
