覚え方
古英語 ġemēting は ġe-（共に）+ mētan（出会う・見つける） から作られた名詞で、「共に出会うこと」が原義。現代語では meet + -ing（動作を表す名詞） の形と重なり、顔を合わせる場＝会議・会合を指す。
mētan は *meh₂d-（出会う）にさかのぼる。接頭辞 ġe- は「共に・完全に」を表し、古英語では動詞や名詞に広く付いたが、現代英語ではほぼ消えた。
meet は meet - met - met の不規則変化。have a meeting（会議をする）・a chance meeting（偶然の出会い）と、「会う」の中身がそのまま残っている。
