encounterの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古フランス語 encontre（出会い・衝突）から。ただすれ違うのではなく、向こうから来たものと正面から向き合う、という手応えのある出会いが元の絵。
動詞では「（思いがけず）出くわす」と「（困難に）直面する」。encounter a problem（問題にぶつかる）・encounter resistance（抵抗に遭う）と、目的語に厄介ごとが来る形が多い。前置詞を挟まず直接目的語をとる点が、meet with との違い。
名詞では「出会い・遭遇」。a chance encounter（偶然の出会い）・a close encounter（間近な遭遇）。英語の counter（対する・反対の）と同じ「向かい合う」感覚がこの語の芯にあると見ると、意味の幅がつかみやすい。
