覚え方
bat はラテン語 battuō（打つ・叩く）で、com が「相手と向かい合って」を添える。互いに正面から打ち合うこと、それが名詞の「戦闘」であり、動詞の「戦う」だ。
単なる対立ではなく、こちらから打ち返す積極さがある。だから比喩でも combat inflation（インフレと戦う）、combat crime のように、問題に立ち向かう場面で使う。
battle（戦闘）・debate（打ち合う→討論）と同じ bat が見えたら「打つ」と読む。combatant（戦闘員）・combative（好戦的な）も同じ仲間。
