ラテン語 cōnfrontō(正面から対峙する・直面する)は、con-(共に・完全に)+ frōns(額・眉間)+ -ō(動詞を作る語尾)と分けられる。相手と額を向かい合わせるイメージから、「正面から向き合う」「対峙する」「直面する」という意味になった。
con- のもとにある *kom-(共に・完全に)は、相手と同じ場に向かい合う感覚を表す。front(前面・正面)・frontier(前線・国境地帯)も frōns と関係があり、front を見たら「正面」、con- が付けば「正面で向き合う」と覚えられる。
