approach1の語源と覚え方

approach はラテン語 appropiō（空間や時間で近づく）につながり、ad-（〜へ）+ prope（近くに）という構成で捉えられる。材料には *ad prope（近くに・そばに）も示され、前へ進むことを表す *pro- が prope と結び付いている。
「〜へ、近くに進む」ことから、approach は「近づく・迫る」だけでなく、問題や課題に近づいて取り組む、つまり「アプローチする・取り組む」という意味にも広がった。語尾の -iō は形容詞から「〜にする」という動詞を作る要素で、ad- で方向、prope で距離の近さを読むのがコツである。
