ラテン語 clausūra（錠・かんぬき）= clausus（閉じられた）+ -tūra（行為やその結果を表す）。「閉じるという行為と、その結果できた状態」が原義で、そこから「閉鎖・終結」になった。
clausus のもとは *kleh₂w-（鉤・閉ざす）。戸を鉤でかけて閉ざす場面を思い浮かべると、工場の closure（閉鎖）も、議論の closure（打ち切り）も同じ「閉めて終わりにする」動作だと分かる。
