ラテン語 agricultūra（農耕）= ager（畑・耕地）+ cultūra（土地の耕作・手入れ）。原義は「土地を耕して手入れすること」で、そのまま現在の「農業」。

後半の cultūra は「作物が育つよう土に手を入れ続ける営み」を指し、そこから対象を人に移して culture（文化・教養）、動詞では cultivate（耕す・育てる）になった。agriculture は「畑を耕す」、culture は「人を耕す」と並べると、同じ語の広がりが見える。

前半の ager は「耕地」で、agricultural（農業の）・agrarian（農地の）・agribusiness（農業関連産業）に共通する部分。agri を見たら「畑」と読めばよい。
