ラテン語 nātūra（性質・本質・自然界）= nāscor（生まれる・生じる）+ -tūra（行為や結果を表す名詞語尾）。生まれつき備わった性質というイメージから、「ものの本質」や、人間の意図を超えて生じる「自然界」を指すようになった。
nāscor の語源にある *ǵenh₁-（産む・生み出す）は、generate（生み出す）・generation（世代、生成）・nation（同じ出自の集団）にも見られる。nat を見たら「生まれつきの性質」と読むと、nature の「自然」と「本質」の両方を結びつけて覚えられる。
