ラテン語 complexiō（組み合わせ・体質・容色）は、complector（抱擁する・包囲する・理解する）+ -tiō（動作・過程・結果を表す名詞語尾）から成る。'kom-（共に・完全に）+ 'pleḱ-（折る・編む）という「いくつかの要素を一緒に編み合わせる」イメージが、体質や外観を形づくるものという意味につながった。
そこから complexion は、顔や皮膚に現れる「肌の色」、さらに人や物の「全体的な様相・性質」を表す。complex・complexity も同じ発想で、plex を見たら「折り重なって複雑になったもの」と覚えるとよい。
