business は busy（忙しい・活動的な）+ -ness（状態・性質）。もとは「忙しく活動している状態」を表し、古英語 bisynes（活動・業務・用事）へつながる。「忙しさ」そのものから、そこで行われる仕事や業務、さらに商取引・職業を指すようになった。
古英語 bisig（忙しい）+ -nesse（状態を表す名詞）から生まれた bisiġnes（忙しさ・心配・関心）が直接の手がかり。busy は「忙しい」、-ness は「その状態」と読めば、business の「業務・ビジネス」まで自然に広がる。
