ラテン語 clausus（閉じられた・囲まれた）は、囲い込む *(s)kleh₂w- + 閉じるための鉤・留め具 *kleh₂w-というイメージを持つ。文章の一部分を区切って囲ったものが clause（節）であり、契約や法律で内容を区切った「条項」へ意味が広がった。

clause は文法では主語と動詞を含むまとまり、法律では一つの規定を囲うまとまりである。close（閉じる）・enclose（中へ囲い込む）・clausure（閉鎖）と同じく、cl-/clos- を見たら「閉じて区切る」と考えると、clause の「節・条項」が定着する。
