覚え方
article はラテン語 articulus（小さな関節・連結語）に由来し、artus（関節・肢体）+ -culus（小さいものを表す指小辞）という構成で捉えられる。関節のように全体をつなぐ「小さな部分」から、文章を構成する一単位や、物の一品を表すようになった。ギリシャ語 ᾰ̓́ρθρον（関節・四肢）も同じ「つなぐ部分」のイメージを持つ。
文法では、名詞に結びついて関係を示す限定詞を article と呼ぶ。art- を見たら、ばらばらのものを関節のようにつなぐ部分と考えると、article（記事・品物）と articulate（明確に区切って表現する）の関係も覚えやすい。背景には *h₂er-（組み合わせる・接合する） がある。
