覚え方
ラテン語 sectiō（分断・除去の過程、外科手術）は、secō（切り裂く・分割する）から作られた。secō（切る）+ -tiō（動作・過程・結果を表す名詞語尾）で、「切ること・切り分けられたもの」という原義になる。
一つの全体を切って分けると、それぞれの区画や部分ができる。そこから section は、文章・組織・建物などの「部分」「区画」を指すようになった。外科の section にも、切開や切除という原義の名残がある。
section、sect、dissect、bisect、intersection はいずれも「切り分ける」発想と結びつく。sect を見たら「切る・区切る」と考えると、section（区画）や dissect（解剖する・細かく分析する）の意味を推測しやすい。
