ラテン語 capitulum（小さな頭・章）から。caput（頭）+ -ulus（指小の形） で「小さな頭」、つまり文章の先頭に立てる小見出しのことだった。
その見出しの下にまとまる本文が「章」になり、比喩で「人生や歴史のひと区切り」（a new chapter in her life＝彼女の人生の新しい章）にも使う。
caput は *kap-（頭）につながり、capital（首都・主要な）・captain（長）・chief・chef と同族。団体の「支部」（the local chapter＝地元支部）の意味も押さえておく。
