assembly は、部品や人を同じ場所へ集め、目的のために一つのまとまりにする語。材料にあるラテン語 assimulō（似せる・見せかける）は、〜へ ad-＋模倣する・偽装する simulōと分けられ、異なるものを同じように扱うイメージを持つ。
そこから、ばらばらだった部品を組み合わせた「組み立て」、また人々を集めた「集会」という二つの意味につながる。assembly line（組立ライン）では部品の集合、legislative assembly（立法議会）では人の集合を表す。
assemble は「一つに寄せ集める」、assembly はその結果としてできたまとまり、と覚えるとよい。背景にある *一つ・共に sem- は same（同じ）や similar（似た）にも通じ、simul を見たら「同じように・一緒に」と考えられる。
