tribunal は、ラテン語の tribūnal（政務官の壇・法廷）に由来する。裁きを担当する人が位置する壇という具体的な場所から、審理や判断を行う「法廷・裁判機関」を表す語になった。現代では建物や部屋だけでなく、案件を審理する人々からなる機関そのものも指す。
