tribun はラテン語 tribūnus（部族を率いる長・ローマの官職）にあたり、al はそれに関わる物や場所を表す。合わせて、その官が座る壇を指し、裁きの行われる場から tribunal は「法廷・審判機関」になった。
今では建物や部屋だけでなく、案件を審理する人々の集まりそのものも指す。appear before a tribunal は「審判機関に出頭する」、a tribunal ruling は「その機関の裁定」。当事者の話を聞き、争点を調べて判断を示す場、と捉えると古い壇の意味とつながる。
