court は、ラテン語 cōrs（cohors の異綴）にさかのぼり、cōrs（囲われた場所）の背景には *horti-（囲い地） がある。もともとは建物や壁に囲まれた開放的な中庭を指した。
囲いの内側に人が集まることから、王侯のいる「宮廷」、裁判を行う「法廷」へ意味が広がった。さらに、線で区切られた「テニスコート」などの競技場や、相手に言い寄る「求愛する」にもつながる。
