cort はイタリア語 corte（宮廷・中庭）。宮廷で君主に付き従うさまから corteggiare（つき従う・言い寄る）が生まれ、フランス語 cortège を経て英語に入った。格式のある付き添いの列がこの語の芯にある。
いちばん多いのは funeral cortege（葬列）で、霊柩車を先頭にゆっくり進む車列を指す。要人に従う一行にも使う。
見せるための parade（行列）ではなく、誰かに付き従う列だという点が使い分けの鍵。フランス語式に cortège と綴られることもある。
