ラテン語 claustrum(かんぬき・囲い)= claudō(閉じる・閉ざす)+ -trum(道具や手段を表す名詞を作る)。「閉ざすためのもの」が原義で、修道院の閉ざされた中庭を囲む 回廊 を指すようになった。
そこから建物全体の「修道院」、さらに比喩で「俗世から隔てられた場所」へ広がる。動詞では「閉じ込める・世を捨てて引きこもる」で、a cloistered life(隠遁生活)、a cloistered academic(世間離れした学者)。
