覚え方

古フランス語 barre（棒・横木・障壁）がそのまま英語 bar に取り入れられた語で、「行く手をふさぐ棒」が原義。

道や入り口に渡した「横木」から、細長い「棒」全般、さらに酒を提供する台としての「バー（カウンター）」、法廷の「バー（弁護士席）」にまで意味が広がった。

同じ barre から barrier（障壁）・barricade（バリケード）が生まれている。bar は「行く手を塞ぐ棒」とイメージすると、動詞の「禁じる・妨げる」の意味ともつながる。
