ラテン語 exclūdō（締め出す・遮断する）= ex-（外へ・徹底的に）+ claudō（閉じる・囲い込む）。「囲いを閉じて、その外側に置く」という原義から、英語の「締め出す・省く」になった。
claudō は、囲いを形成する *(s)kleh₂w-（周囲に囲いを形成する）や、閉じるための鉤・留め具を表す *kleh₂w- と結びつく。入口を閉じて外へ置く、と考えると exclude の意味を覚えやすい。
exclude と同じ ex- を持つ export（外へ運ぶ）や expel（外へ追い出す）も、「外へ」という方向が共通する。clud／clus を見たら、閉じて中に入れないと読むのがコツ。
