counter1の語源と覚え方
覚え方
counter（対応する）は、ラテン語 contrā（反対に・対して）に由来する。反対側に向かってという方向感覚から、「相手に対応する」「相手の行動に反対の行動を取る」「反対方向へ進む」という意味になった。
counterattack（反撃する）や counterargument（反論）は、相手に対して逆向きの働きを返す語である。名詞の「カウンター」と同じ綴りでも、こちらは数量を数える道具ではなく、相手に向かい合い、反対の動きを返す counter と覚えると区別しやすい。

覚え方
count（数える）+ -er（〜するもの・〜する人） で「数えるもの」。中英語 countour（計算する人・計算用の駒） は古フランス語 conte（勘定・計算）+ -ātor（行為者を表す名詞を作る） の流れで、背景には *kom-（共に）がある。
店の「カウンター」は、勘定を数える台がそのまま客と店員が向き合う台の名になったもの。ゲームの得点マーカーや Geiger counter（ガイガー計数管）は「数える駒・数える装置」の側で、「数える」＋「勘定台」の二本立て で押さえるとよい。
なお counterattack（反撃）の counter- は「反対に」を表す別の語。形が同じでも出どころが違う。
