古英語 lippa(唇) をそのまま受け継いだ語。ラテン語やフランス語を経由せずに伝わった、体の部位を表す古い在来語のひとつ。
背景にある *leb-(だらりと垂れる・唇) は「垂れ下がるもの」というイメージで、口のふちの柔らかく垂れた部分がそのまま名前になっている。そこから「コップの縁」「傷口のふち」のように、ふちどりの部分一般を指す用法へ広がった。
慣用句では「口=発言」の象徴として使う。lip service(口先だけの奉仕→上辺だけの同意)、bite one's lip(唇を噛む→言いたいことをこらえる)、My lips are sealed.(他言しません)。
