marginの語源と覚え方
覚え方
margin はラテン語 margō（縁・境界線・余白）に由来する。中心から外へ向かう端の部分、つまり 縁・境界線 が原義で、紙の端に残る「余白」や、二つの領域の「境界部分」を表すようになった。
そこから、価格・得点・勝敗などの「差」も、両者の境目にある幅として margin と呼ばれる。margin を見たら「中心ではなく、端にある幅」と考えると、余白・縁辺部・差という意味をまとめて覚えられる。
marginal（限界の・重要性の低い・周辺的な）は margin から生まれた語。margin は「端」を表し、そこから「中心から外れた」「わずかな差しかない」という意味へ広がる。
