edge は古英語 eċġ（刃先・切れ味）に由来する。eċġ（刃先）のように、物の表面で終わる鋭い線が原義で、そこから「端・縁・境界線」を表すようになった。さらに競争や交渉で相手より一歩先に立つことを、端から突き出ているイメージで「優位性」と表す。
背後の h₂eḱ-（鋭い・尖った） は、刃物の先端を思わせる。edge を見たら「鋭く尖った端」と覚えれば、物理的な端から、have an edge（有利である）のような抽象的な優位まで自然に連想できる。
