フランス語 déférence（敬意・服従） から入った語で、déférer（付託する・従う）+ -ence（状態や性質を表す名詞を作る） という作り。déférer には *bʰer-（運ぶ）が含まれ、判断を相手のもとへ「運んで委ねる」感覚が芯にある。
そこから、目上の人や相手の意向を尊重して従う「敬意・服従」を表す。in deference to（〜に敬意を表して・〜を尊重して）の形でよく使う。
defer（相手の判断に従う）の状態が deference。同じ defer でも「延期する」の意味は別の流れなので、deference は「敬意」側に限られる点に注意。
