compliance は *com-（共に・完全に）+ pleh₁-（満たす）+ -ance（状態・行為を表す名詞語尾） という組み合わせで、「条件を完全に満たして周囲と歩調を合わせる」イメージ。そこから comply は「従う・同意する・準拠する」、compliance はその状態や行為である「遵守・順応・適合」になった。
*pleh₁- の「満たす」感覚は、条件や要求を満たすという意味につながる。com- は「共に・完全に」、-pl- 系は「満たす」と見抜けば、compliance を「求められた条件を完全に満たすこと」と覚えられる。compatible（共に適合する）や complete（完全に満たされた）を連想するのもコツ。
