ラテン語 oboedientia(従順・服従)から。oboediō(従う)+ -ia(抽象名詞をつくる) で、「従うこと」がそのまま名詞になった形である。
英語でも「服従・従順」を指し、blind obedience(盲従)、obedience to the law(法に従うこと)のように使う。犬のしつけ競技を obedience training と呼ぶのもこの語である。
形容詞は obedient、動詞は obey。obey / obedi- は「言うことを聞いて従う」と押さえ、名詞形で -ence の綴りになることを覚えておくとよい。
