覚え方
ラテン語 baculum(杖・棒)にさかのぼる語。棒=杭を並べて作った囲いが元の姿で、そこから城の外壁と、その内側の広場(中庭)を指すようになった。
中世の城は、土を盛った丘の上の主塔(motte)と、麓を囲った広場(bailey)の組み合わせが典型で、motte-and-bailey castle と呼ぶ。bailey=城壁で囲われた庭と押さえる。
補足: ロンドンの中央刑事裁判所 the Old Bailey は、市壁沿いの通りの名から。bacillus(小さな杖)も同じ baculum の一族で、一本の「棒」から城の囲いにも菌の名にも広がったのがおもしろい。
