古英語 fæġer（美しい・心地よい）にさかのぼる fair は、もともと「見た目に心地よい、魅力的な」という意味だった。語源の *peh₂ḱ-（分離された要素を接触させる）から、整っていて調和が取れているイメージを思い浮かべるとよい。
