episode はフランス語 épisode（エピソード・一件）を通じて英語に入った。背後にある再建形 *sed-（座る）には、「座る」「腰を据える」というイメージがある。
物語の流れの中で、いったん腰を据えて扱われる一つの出来事や場面という感覚から、「挿話」「一回分の話」、さらに連続ドラマなどの「各回」へ意味が発展した。
episode は物語の中に差し込まれた一まとまりの出来事と覚えるとよい。テレビ番組の一話にも、人生や歴史上の一件にも使えるのは、独立して取り出せる場面・出来事だからである。
