覚え方
neighborhood は、中期英語 neȝeburredde にさかのぼる。これは neighbour に別の接尾辞が付いた語で、のちに neighbour（近隣に住む人）+ -hood（状態・性質・集団） と解釈され、今の形に変わった。「近隣の人々が作る状態・集団」を表す語と見るとよい。
そこから、個々の近隣住民ではなく、その人々が暮らす「近所・周辺地域」という意味になった。neighbour は人、neighborhood は人々と場所を含むまとまりと区別すると覚えやすい。brotherhood（兄弟の集まり）や childhood（子どもである状態）の -hood も同じ見方ができる。
