覚え方
neighborhood は、neighbour（近隣に住む人）+ -red（状態・在り方）+ -hood（状態・性質・集団）という組み立てで、「近隣の人々が作る状態・集団」を表す。古英語系の neȝeburredde も、定住地を取り巻く地域や共同体を指していた。
そこから、個々の近隣住民ではなく、その人々が暮らす「近所・周辺地域」という意味になった。neighbour は人、neighborhood は人々と場所を含むまとまりと区別すると覚えやすい。brotherhood（兄弟の集まり）や childhood（子どもである状態）の -hood も同じ見方ができる。
