覚え方
ラテン語 proximitās（近接・類似・親密）= proximus（最も近い・隣接する）+ -tās（状態）。proximusは「次に近いもの、隣にあるもの」を表し、そこから「距離や関係が近い状態」という proximity の意味になった。
英語の -ity（状態・性質） も、抽象的な状態を表す語尾として働く。proximityは単なる物理的な近さだけでなく、人間関係や因果関係の近さにも使えるので、prox-を見たら『最も近い』、-ityを見たら『その状態』と読むと覚えやすい。
