古英語 strǣt（街路・道）にさかのぼる。street は、町の中を通り、両側に建物などが並ぶ「通り」を表す。人や車が行き交い、店の入口や家の住所が並ぶ場面を思い浮かべよう。

cross the street は「通りを渡る」、a busy shopping street は「にぎやかな商店街」。Main Street のように通りの名前にも使われる。建物の間を進む日常の道と結び付けると、地図や道案内の中で意味を捉えやすい。
