覚え方
chance は、古フランス語 cheance（偶然・運）を受け継いだ語で、さらに「落ちる」という語根につながる。ラテン語 cadere には「落ちる」のほかに「起こる」の意味もある。結果が偶然こちらへ落ちてくると考えると、「偶然の機会」「可能性」につなげて覚えやすい。
動詞は名詞から出た語で、「結果がどう落ちるか分からない」と考えると、「賭ける」「一か八かで試す」という意味も覚えやすい。chance を見たら、運命や結果が自分のもとへ落ちてくるイメージで、「偶然」と「可能性」をまとめて覚えるとよい。
