覚え方
ラテン語 regiō（地域・行政区画、対格 regiōnem）は、regō（支配する・統治する）+ -iō（動詞から抽象名詞を作る）からできた。統治者が一定の範囲をまっすぐ定め、管理する場所が「地域」になった。
region は単なる土地ではなく、境界を設けて行政的に区分した区域という意味で使われる。国や都市の一部を指す場合にも、広い範囲の地方を指す場合にも用いられる。
regō の背景にある *h₃reǵ-（まっすぐにする）を手がかりに、reg を見たら「線をまっすぐ定め、統治する」と覚えると、region の「区画」のイメージにつながる。regal や regulate も、支配・規則の連想でまとめやすい。
